SCAD president and founder Paula Wallace talks with André 3000 Benjamin about the inspiration behind the collaborative exhibition “i feel ya: SCAD + André 3000 Benjamin” on Dec. 4 at the Design Miami Collector’s Breakfast.
André 3000, half of six-time Grammy Award-winning duo OutKast, designed 46 custom jumpsuits featuring different phrases emblazoned across the chest — one for each stop on the group’s recent 20-year reunion tour. The phrases are his way of saying something new as an artist while performing songs he had written, in some cases, decades ago, he tells Wallace.
For the “i feel ya,” exhibition, which ran Dec. 3-14 at the Mana Miami Wynwood in Miami, Florida, the jumpsuits were featured in one space for the first time alongside an experimental film by Greg Brunkalla and oversized mirror paintings by Jimmy O’Neal, both SCAD alumni.
This episode provides an in-depth look at the creation of Kara Walker’s monumental public project, “A Subtlety, or the Marvelous Sugar Baby” (2014), at the Domino Sugar Factory in Brooklyn, NY. Seated in her Manhattan studio, Walker explains how the molasses-covered space, along with her extensive research into the history of sugar, inspired her to create a colossal sugar-coated sphinx, as well as a series of life-sized, sugar and resin boy figurines. A team of artists and fabricators are shown constructing and coating the sphinx, which, as Walker says, gains its power by “upsetting expectations, one after the other.” Commissioned by Creative Time, “A Subtlety, or the Marvelous Sugar Baby” is the first large-scale public project by Walker who is best known for her cut paper silhouette installations, drawings, and watercolors. “A Subtlety, or the Marvelous Sugar Baby” is on view until July 6, 2014. Thereafter, the factory will be demolished to make way for condominiums. Read More

This video is amazing. The dancer is so talented and really owned this video, I need to find out who she is! Sia’s voice pierces my soul ❤ P.S. Guess they didn’t want the black (bag?) on the bed at 48 secs so they removed it? (53 secs) haha. I love the way this video was shot and the location. Again, that little girl has my heart now!
